Funny Medieval Cat Paintings  You might have seen funny and awkward medieval cat paintings. The pictures with them are still amusing, but back then, the fate of these cats wasn’t so great. In 1233, the Pope said that black cats were evil creatures because they belonged to Satan. He also described how witches created a group of followers by kissing a statue of a black cat on its tail, and the devil himself was half-man, half-cat. Because of this, black cats were seen as allies of witches and minions of hell, which isn’t good at all. In medieval paintings, cats weren’t very common because artists followed religious rules that didn’t allow them to show anything evil. However, sometimes cats appeared in religious scenes, often portrayed as a symbol of laziness, lust, deception, and betrayal. Some old cat paintings even showed these animals in the story about how Eve was seduced in the Garden of Eden. But these were rare cases because, at that time, cats mostly appeared in books and bestiaries, which contained stories and instructions about animals, including mythical ones. The painters during the Middle Ages didn’t use perspective techniques, and their paintings weren’t very complicated because they were mostly religious scenes that had to teach people something instead of being beautiful. In books, the rules were even simpler because the goal was to provide information rather than artistry. Some artists tried to make cats look more human by giving them eyebrows and faces that looked like a person’s. They also imagined that cats could clean houses or play musical instruments. However, these attempts weren’t very successful. In the end, it’s better not to offend cats because, during the Middle Ages, people did that too much. Cats in old paintings already were painted as evil creatures, but they stopped being bad and became popular again. Even Leonardo da Vinci said that every cat was a masterpiece created by nature.
